There are over 1400 international students attending college here in Omaha. Most are from countries where the gospel is restricted or prohibited. Many come from a Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist background. For many students, this may be the only opportunity they have to hear a clear presentation of the gospel.
A Friendship Partner is an individual or family who befriend an international student. It is estimated that less than 20% of all international students will ever set foot inside an American home although many desire an American friend. A Friendship Partner is someone who builds a trusting friendship with their student by contacting them weekly and getting together at least once a month. Inviting a student over for dinner or including them in regular family activities is a wonderful way to build that friendship. As the relationship grows, it often leads to opportunities to share the gospel.
International students face many challenges while studying abroad. They must think and speak in English all day long. Although most have good English skills before arriving, it is still an exhausting exercise. Strange foods and culture must be contended with as well as trying to keep up with the hurried American pace, so unlike most other cultures in the world. Being thousands of miles from family and friends can cause many to go through very lonely times. A Friendship Partner can help to make these transitions a little easier.
Glad Tidings Church currently has over 50 Friendship Partners. If you are interested in befriending an international student, please e-mail Pam Franks, Missions Coordinator, at
